Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to relieve urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that affects most men as they age. As the prostate grows, it can narrow the urethra and lead to weak urine flow, incomplete bladder emptying, increased frequency or urgency, incontinence, and painful urination. During PAE, an interventional radiologist guides a catheter through a small incision in the thigh or wrist to the arteries supplying the prostate and injects microscopic FDA-approved particles to reduce blood flow, shrinking the gland by about 30–40% and improving symptoms.
