Overview
Needle biopsy is commonly used to identify the cause of a lump or mass, or other abnormal conditions in the body.
During the procedure, the doctor inserts a small needle guided by X-rays, ultrasound or a CT scan. The needle is guided into the abnormal area. A sample of tissue is removed and given to the pathologist for review. The needles used are typically very small and there is minimal to no pain associated with the biopsy.
